Fraud

What is public assistance fraud?

Buying, selling, giving away or misusing benefits for any programs paid for with tax dollars, including:

  • Food Assistance
  • Medicaid
  • Ohio Works First
  • Child Care
  • Unemployment Compensation

Improperly reporting or failing to report:

  • Income
  • Resources
  • Household Members
  • Housing Expenses

What are penalties for fraud?

Individuals found to be committing fraud:

  • Are removed from the program
  • Must repay any improperly obtained benefits
  • May face criminal charges and jail time

How big of a problem is it?

Most people receiving public assistance honestly report their information and use benefits as intended. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has no tolerance for fraud. Every dishonest dollar spent wastes taxpayers’ money and creates an unfair stigma for those who deserve and are eligible for benefits.
